Marco Island bounces back after Hurricane Irma. It’s been a few weeks since Hurricane Irma made a direct landfall on Marco Island. Despite the intensity of the category 3 storm, our small island in paradise held up amazingly! Most of the damage involved downed pool cages, missing roof tiles, leaks, or fallen trees. Though it hasn’t been easy, it seems like we’re almost back to normal.
During the past two weeks both locals and longtime visitors have come together in a lot of awe-inspiring ways to help those affected by the storm. From hurricane relief funding campaigns, to on the ground volunteerism, the people of Marco Island have been incredible! We are Marco Strong!
One volunteer group in particular, the Marco Island Patriots, have gone above and beyond the call of duty. The Marco Island Patriots is an online Facebook group that was originally created as a way of registering individuals who chose to stay on Marco Island during Hurricane Irma.
After the storm passed, it quickly became the go-to spot for information regarding hurricane relief efforts, volunteer/fundraising opportunities, and local resources.
The group continues to deliver vital supplies to the people of Marco Island and neighboring communities, many of which were hit particularly hard by the hurricane. Goodland, the small fishing village just six miles east of Marco Island, was devastated by the storm.
It’s remarkable how two areas so close to each other had very different outcomes. Many buildings in Goodland were severely damaged, including the famous Stan’s Idle Hour Restaurant.
Fortunately the people of Goodland, the Marco Patriots, and numerous volunteers have been working hard day and night to rebuild the town. Despite the damage, Goodland should be up and running within the next few months! In facat, Stan’s Idle Hour is expected to re-open in November (just in time for peak season!).
In terms of our properties, we at Marco Island Beach Getaway were very lucky. Thankfully, both of our beachfront condos were safe during the storm. Neither sustained any harm, zero.
The Sea Winds building and the Apollo, however, did receive mild to moderate damage. As a result, both buildings were closed for a short period of time while repairs were being made.
The Apollo officially opened its doors to guests again on September 28th. As of right now Sea Winds remains closed but anticipates a mid-October opening.

We are thankful!
In the weeks following Hurricane Irma, we’ve received an incredible outpouring of support from our guests, both past and present. It’s truly been amazing!
We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone for their encouragement and prayers. We also wish to thank the electric companies, the Florida Forestry Service, our local firefighters and police officers, and the many volunteers for their continued help, hard work, and dedication to the people of southwest Florida. We’re so grateful.
To show our gratitude we’ve donated both money and supplies to the Hurricane Irma Relief Fund, as well as the Marco Patriots Facebook group. In addition, a portion of your rental fees have gone towards Marco Island/Florida’s recovery. Thank you!
